WASHINGTON – An April 5 story about state efforts to verify the eligibility of people on Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System rolls mischaracterized parts of the verification process. AHCCCS, the state’s Medicaid program, expects that it can determine eligibility of about three-quarters of current enrollees simply by checking already-available federal data, and it is working with the Department of Economic Security to streamline the process for food stamp recipients.

WASHINGTON – A March 17 story about a Navajo water rights case before the Supreme Court gave an incorrect title for Michael Lerma and misheard part of his quote that was used in the story. Lerma, who is the executive director of the Diné Policy Institute at Diné College, referred to tribes’ relationship to the federal government as that of “a quote-unquote ‘ward.'”

EDS: Clients who used the Cronkite News story slugged BC-CNS-Coyotes District Opposition that moved Monday, March 20, under a TEMPE dateline are asked to run the following correction. The errors occurred in the fifth, 22nd and 23rd grafs. A corrected version of the story has been posted here.

TEMPE – A March 20 story about a proposed Arizona Coyotes arena and entertainment district included an outdated title for Lauren Kuby, who is a former senior global futures scientist at ASU’s Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory. A parenthetical explanation in a quote from Kuby also was inaccurate. It should read: “We built the (request for) proposal just to attract one response, and that was the Coyotes.” Finally, the word “union” was deleted from “more than 6,000 jobs,” because the number of union jobs is unknown.

EDS: Clients who used the Cronkite News story slugged BC-CNS-ESA Rally that moved Wednesday, March 1, under a PHOENIX dateline are asked to delete a photo that accompanied the story and replace the video. 

The photo has been deleted from our site and the video edited to remove imagery of some students. School officials identified the students as not having parental permission through the school to be photographed. The photo and video were taken at the Capitol in a public location, but Cronkite News is removing the images out of an abundance of caution because the subjects are minors.

PHOENIX – A Feb. 16 story about financial troubles for Diamond Sports Group, the parent of Bally Sports Arizona, which has the rights to broadcast Arizona Diamondbacks games, misstated the company’s debt. Diamond Sports Group this week failed to make a $140 million interest payment on its nearly $9 billion debt.

FLAGSTAFF – A Jan. 19 Cronkite News story about a new Salt River Project solar plant planned near Flagstaff included incorrect timing and misattributed a quote related to an antitrust lawsuit filed against the utility in 2020. One of the plaintiffs alleged in the complaint that he was “‘directly and economically hurt by’ SRP’s exclusionary pricing scheme, which is aimed at suppressing competition by discouraging customers from installing solar-energy systems.” The comments were related to the 2015 public price process, which was updated in 2019. The lawsuit was thrown out by a lower court in 2020 but reversed by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year.
